Unboxing xTool F1: Guide for Beginners
Unboxing a new piece of tech is always exciting, and the xTool F1 Laser Engraver stands out with its sleek design. This machine is designed for speed and portability, and the packaging reflects that simplicity.
With the Video, here is a quick, step-by-step guide to unboxing and setting up your xTool F1.

Step 1: Open the Outer Box
Cut the tape on the top of the main shipping box. Inside, you’ll find a layer of protective foam. The xTool F1 is carefully packaged to keep all components stable during transit.

Step 2: Remove the Accessories
Before lifting the machine, remove the green accessory boxes positioned around the main unit. These contain essential components like:
- Material Pack: This starter kit contains wood, slate, and metal business cards, along with additional materials to help you begin immediately.
- Power Adapter & Cable: The lifeblood of your engraver.
- Pipe: A flexible white hose that attaches to the back of the unit to vent fumes.
- Triangular Prism Working Panel (*Working Panel): The metal plate where you’ll place your materials.
The xTool F1 weighs approximately 4.6 kg (10 lbs) and feels lightweight. Use the built-in handle to lift it straight out of the foam casing.

Step 3: Review the Documentation
Don’t toss the paperwork! You’ll find a Quick Start Guide and Safety Instructions. The guide is heavy on visuals, making it very easy to follow for your first project.

How to Set Up Your xTool F1 Laser Engraver Step by Step
The paper manual provides guidance, and a visual walkthrough helps make the process easier to understand.
For your engraving jewelry journey, here is everything you need to know after getting your machine out of the box and ready to create.

Step 1: Power Up & Insert the Security Key
- Connect the power adapter to the transformer box and plug the other end into the back of the xTool F1.
- The xTool F1 features a security lock for safety. Insert the small black key into the designated slot on the side of the machine.
Note: Removing the key locks the machine and prevents operation. Keep your spare in a safe place!

Step 2: Remove Shipping Protection
Several pieces of strong, transparent tape secure the machine to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.
- Peel off the tape on the back and sides.
- Once the tape is removed, the protective shield will be able to slide up and down freely.

Step 3: Unpack Internal Accessories and Install them
Slide the protective shield up to find the internal foam packaging. Inside the foam, you will find:
- The Baseplate (the main working surface)
- The L-shaped positioning piece (used for consistent batch alignment)
Install the Baseplate or Working Panel
- For Engraving: Simply slide the metal baseplate into the bottom of the machine. It is removable, allowing you to place the F1 directly on top of larger objects (like a table or birdhouse) to engrave through the bottom.
- For Cutting: Place the Working Panel on top of the baseplate.
Pro Tip: Set the plate or panel to face the exhaust fan at the back. This allows the air to be sucked out efficiently without being blocked.

Step 4: Attach the Exhaust System
Snap the pipe onto the fan outlet at the back of the machine. You can vent this pipe out a window or connect it to a desktop air purifier to keep your workspace smoke-free.
Ready to Engrave?
Once your hardware is set up, you can download the xTool Studio software to your PC or tablet, connect your machine via USB or Wi-Fi, and start your first project!

Step 1: Initial Software Connection
- Download xTool Studio: Ensure you have the latest version installed on your PC or Mac.
- Power On: Plug in your machine and flip the switch. Ensure the emergency stop button is pulled up (active) and the security key is inserted.
- Connect: Link the machine to your computer via the provided USB cable. In XCS, click on “Connect Device” and select your xTool F1 from the list.

Step 2: Manual and Auto-Focus Calibration
Focusing is the most critical step for a clean engraving. The F1 uses a unique dual-laser system that requires precise alignment.
- Place Your Material: Put a flat piece of scrap material on the baseplate.
- The “Two Dot” Method: Turn the knob on the side of the machine. You will see two red laser dots on your material.
- Align the Dots: Rotate the knob until the two dots merge into one single point.
- Tip: If you can’t see the dots, ensure the protective shield is lowered or wear your safety goggles.
- Auto-Focus (Optional): If you prefer, you can use the “Auto-focus” button in XCS. The machine will use its internal sensors to measure the height and adjust the laser head automatically.

Step 3: Framing and Positioning
To ensure your design lands exactly where you want it:
- Import Design: Drag your logo or text into XCS.
- Select Process: Choose whether you are using the 10W Blue Light (for wood, acrylic, etc.) or the 2W Infrared Light (for metals and plastics).
- Click “Preview”: The F1 will project a high-speed blue light rectangle onto your material. This shows you exactly where the engraving will take place.
- Adjust: Move your material or the design in the software until it fits perfectly within the blue rectangle.

Step 4: The First Test Run
Don’t jump straight to your finished product! Always run a test.
- Set Power/Speed: Use the “Material Library” in XCS for a head start, or manually set your parameters.
- Lower the Shield: Ensure the green protective cover is fully down.
- Press Start: Click the “Process” button in XCS, then press the physical Start button on the side of the F1.
💡 Pro-Blog Tips for Success
- Keep the Field Lens Clean: Use a lint-free cloth and alcohol to wipe the bottom lens every few projects. Dust can block the laser beam and ruin your calibration.
- The L-Shaped Positioning Piece: Use the “jig” shown in the video for batch processing. Once you calibrate for one item, the jig ensures every subsequent item is in the exact same spot.
- Ventilation is Key: Ensure your exhaust pipe is either leading out a window or connected to the xTool Smoke Purifier to keep your workspace odor-free.
